I’ll be forever excited to sleep in a hotel. Even if it’s a Holiday Inn around the corner and for just one night…Anything that breaks the routine will do. Add an adjective like “unique” to your invitation and I’ll go from “excited” to “thrilled” in seconds. It doesn’t have to be too fancy; count me in. I even have an accommodation bucket list, does that even exist?
I don’t know what exactly spikes my interest, perhaps just the idea of trying something different…I’m anything but a creature of habit.
Since I’ve got this interest in exciting stays and fun and unusual experiences, I’ve decided to create this new section in The L Axis…Unique Experiences.
I will start by detailing my “accommodation bucket list” below, and then I’ll write about these experiences as I scratch them off the list (if I ever do!). Aside from keeping track of the list, writing about them also gives me another reason to prioritize & book them ASAP!
As you’ll see, some of these are very specific, but others are broad. I’m sure this list will continue to grow…my husband should brace himself!
“If you can dream it, you can do it.” – Walt Disney
Hôtel de Glace, Quebec, Canada
Why? I think this is an architectural masterpiece, built each year during the Canadian winter season from scratch! Coming from the Miami tropical weather, I love the challenge of sleeping in an ice bed. It’s also the only ice accommodation in America…not too far from home and not insanely expensive either.
Sleeping in a treehouse
I don’t have a particular tree house in mind, as long as it is a treehouse, I’ll be happy. If it has lights and a hanging bridge like this Atlanta one, then it’ll be a bonus.
Why? I think this could be a unique, romantic, and relaxing experience. Especially if there are lots of birds around. Besides, social distancing, anyone?
Giraffe Manor, Nairobi, Kenya
Why? Breakfast with the tallest mammals on Earth! From what I’ve seen, the manor also looks very unique and interesting. In case you need another reason, I have been convinced by a close friend that this is a must-have bucket list item! Maybe we can even check it out together?
Staying in a beach front house
Ever since I watched the show Revenge on Netflix I knew I wanted to stay in a beach front house. I’m not recommending the show, I actually didn’t finish it. But look at that house in North Carolina. Actually, the show takes place in the Hamptons, but to be honest, any destination works as long as I can stay in a similar house!
Why? A beach house must be 1000 times nicer than staying at an ocean front hotel. Breakfast in the back porch looking at the sunrise and enjoying the ocean breeze should be a memorable and unique experience. S’mores at night on a windy Autumn night also sounds very appealing. And of course, the private and direct beach access is the #1 reason!
Staying at an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean
One of the most popular vacation options in South Florida is spending a week in an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean, but we have never been to one!
In fact, we have ignored the Caribbean for years…we’ve always thought that these resorts are around the corner, and there is a lifetime ahead of us to have an all-inclusive beach vacation.
Why? I want to see what the fuss is all about! Maybe for once I can forget about planning and just go with the flow.
Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort, Thailand
This is the only accommodation that is off this list so far!
Date scratched: April 2017
We stayed here for 4 nights during our honeymoon in Thailand…it exceeded all of our expectations as soon as we saw the room. I will be writing a detailed blog post about our experience in Santhiya Koh Yao Yai…Stay tuned for that!
Why? A wooden Thai style hotel, very affordable and romantic, far from the Phuket madness, yet close enough for day trips. I really do think this is the perfect place to stay for a honeymoon in Thailand. The initial plan was to go back for our 10 years wedding anniversary…maybe!
The 5 Million Star Hotel, Iceland
Why? Just look at this picture, you have a chance to see the northern lights dancing around from your own bed (if you get lucky, of course)! The buubble hotel is only ~1 hour from Reykjavík, the Icelandic capital, making it a very convenient stay. A must-do in Iceland.
Outdoor camping, anywhere
We have never gone on a camping trip, and I would love to live the sleeping-in-a-tent experience. One place we have in mind is Ginnie Springs in Florida. We visited the park last year and the camping facilities seem to be more than what you need for a comfortable stay… maybe some time this summer!
Why? It’s a fun, minimalist and affordable way to get closer to nature, far from technology and a great way to discover more of our own backyards.
Cappadocia Cave Hotel
Why? If we make it all the way to Cappadocia, I don’t want to settle for an ordinary hotel. Choosing a cave style accommodation is as close to experiencing the culture and lifestyle as you can get. Also, imagine waking up to a view like the one in this photo. I am sure that’s a once in a lifetime experience for many of us.
Japan Capsule hotel
Why? I don’t have much to say about these, honestly, I ask myself why I would want to stay there…I guess they are just different. How are these even considered rooms? Still, I want to experience it firsthand…uncomfortable? We will see!
Staying in an African safari lodge
Why? Have you watched The Crown? I watched only a few episodes, including the one were Queen Elizabeth went to Kenya…that’s the kind of accommodation I have in mind. In my case, any hotel with an African savanna view works, but spotting wildlife freely roaming around the property would definitely be a bonus.
Roaming in a camper van/RV
Why? The flexibility of just “parking” your home anywhere should be awesome. Kind of like a snail, you’ll always have your safe place around. You don’t have to worry about your trip back to the hotel when driving for hours, and everything is at your reach when staying in one of these. Honestly, I don’t know if we would be fans of camping sites, but definitely something
we I would love to try at least once.
Staying in a tiny house
Why? Tiny houses seem to to be trending nowadays, but to me they just look like doll houses. I don’t think we’re minimalists enough to be able to live in one of these full-time, but it’s something I would love to try…for a weekend.
Staying in a boat house
Why? Just like camping, this is a unique way to have some time away from everyday life and enjoy nature to the fullest. Sunrises & sunsets from one of these boat houses in the Florida Keys should be stunning. I have witnessed a few from the mainland and they surely are one of a kind. Plus, you also have the chance of seeing dolphins and manatees swimming around while you’re there! In order to get to your room, you have to either kayak or take a dinghy; a fun way to start the getaway.
Marina Bay Sands, Singapore
Why? The icon of Singapore. Its Sands SkyPark Infinity Pool is among the coolest pools in the world (in my opinion, anyways). This has been in my bucket list since it first opened in 2010. But it’s not just about the pools, the hotel architecture, mall and gardens also look stunning. I swear one day we will make it there!
Fun fact: The SkyPark on the rooftop is longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower!
Staying next to a rice field in Bali
Why? I don’t want to miss the opportunity to wake up next to a rice field whenever we visit Bali. Not sure if I am right, but I picture this as a very peaceful location. An infinity pool would be a bonus! I haven’t done much research on this, but from what I’ve seen these properties are also incredibly affordable for someone visiting from the United States.
An overwater bungalow, preferably in the Maldives
Why? Why not? Shouldn’t this be in every bucket list? It does not get any better than an overwater bungalow! We’re not the type to lay on a beach all day long, but this would be a very cool (and luxurious) way to unwind and unplug.
Tuscany stay with a view of the wineries
Why? I am not a wine expert/lover but I do think these villas are picture perfect. We loved our time in Italy, but I am still dreaming of riding a vespa in Tuscany! Maybe next time…
Staying at an underwater hotel
Why? It doesn’t get any more unique than an underwater hotel. These are another level of accommodation! Imagine a room with a view of the sea life in action. I only hope getting in and out does not require any advanced skills, if we have to scuba to get to the room, then I am probably not doing it.
Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, Dubai, UAE
I’m leaving this one for the end because this is a very EXPENSIVE one! But daydreaming is free, right?
Why? Dubai did not impress me the first time around. Maybe this 7 star hotel, seating on its own man-made island will change my mind…I doubt it, but having such a luxurious hotel in my bucket list will make me work even harder to scratch it off, so let’s leave it here…
Hope my list inspires you to create your own accommodation bucket list. Maybe we can make this a thing!
